Synopsis:

FRESH celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.

Among several main characters, FRESH features urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur's 2008 Genius Award; sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan's book, The Omnivore's Dilemma; and supermarket owner, David Ball, challenging our Wal-Mart dominated economy.

Total running time: 72 minutes
Production Year: 2009

This movie was inspirational! I have already been eating free-range and grass-fed meat, but this reiterated how important it is to do so. The movie also helped me to re-commit myself to buying organic produce.

People often talk about how expensive it is to buy organic or local. Yes, free-range/grass-fed meat is about double the price of conventional meat, but I've found the taste and the way I feel from it is worth the extra money. Also, the farmer's market is a very inexpensive place to get local vegetables and fruits. We're lucky that Minneapolis and St. Paul have a year-round farmer's market!

I like to watch these kinds of food documentaries occasionally to remind myself why I'm selective of the foods I buy and put into my body.

This is a really great article about eating locally grown or organic foods, when you should, when you don't need to and some myths and truths about organically certified foods.

For the last few years, I have been purchasing organic produce and dairy plus range free and grass fed meats. While it is indeed more costly, I have found if I cut out the sugary treats, chips and junk food I pretty much break even. Additionally, if I eliminate any fast food, I come out ahead .... and not just financially!
