Composting: Trash into Treasure

How To Make Compost via Noolmusic.com

We've talked about eating organic food, buying grass fed and hormone free meats and supporting local farms. All for the purpose of improving our health and helping the environment.

It's warming up and we're thinking about our gardens. A perfect time to start your own compost pile.

Maybe you're ready to grow a few of your own vegetables, or maybe you simply want the best looking yard and plants on your block!

If you don't already compost, give it some consideration. Where I live in Linden Hills, we have a neighborhood composting program. I'm thinking of starting our own compost pile right at home.

Composting gives you rich soil for your yard, whether it's organic vegetables or plants and flowers. Watch this informative video to learn how.

Do YOU compost? Tell us your experience and pass along any special tips!

Between recycling and composting, my husband and I have greatly reduced the amount of trash we generate. During any given week we only throw out 1 bag of garbage and because there isn't anything decomposing, it never gets stinky! You can even compost your dryer lint (considered a "brown" source).

I have been composting for about 7years now so have been able to improve the soil in my flower and vegetable gardens. I never have to send any bags of leaves away. What doesn't get composted, gets put around existing plants and shrubs. Sure is nice having a place to put vegetable scraps.

When I lived in an "integrated" (totally recycled-yep everything) urban homestead in California we had a very elaborate 3 bin system. The instructions here are much simpler. One year ago, the City of Richmond was selling really nice bins for $20. So people might check that out.

Helpful composting video. I've been composting for two years and apparently have not added enough water because my compost does not look anything like the finished product in this video. This will be my summer garden project....keep adding water to the pile! I hope to use the compost product in my perennial gardens!

We started composting last summer at the cabin to reduce the amount of wet, stinky garbage to haul home. That really made a difference. This year we'll use the compost in our new garden! Keeping it wet was key, but we gave up turning it when the mosquitos were bad. We have an enclosed bin composter at the cabin, and this year started an open bin at home for yard waste.

I have had a compost bin for a couple years and really didn't use it efficiently. I am determined to become better this spring and summer.
